Why AI product teams pick TheyAsked over Frill

Frill is a tidy feedback board with a good widget, announcements and a prioritization matrix. Its MCP server can read your ideas but cannot change anything. TheyAsked is built for teams that want Claude, Cursor or their own agents to work the board: rank by revenue, log what a customer said, and close the loop.

Short answer

Pick Frill if your team works mostly in a browser, wants a polished widget with boosted announcements, and likes scoring ideas on a benefit and cost matrix. Pick TheyAsked if your agents should do real work on the board. Frill documents a read-only MCP with 10 tools behind an API key. TheyAsked has 33 tools, 16 of them writes behind granular scopes, plus OAuth, prompts and interactive views inside Claude. It ranks requests by unique voters and the MRR of the companies voting, and it includes customer SSO on the $29 Pro plan, where Frill asks for Growth at $149.

Why AI product managers and engineers pick TheyAsked

  1. Your agent can act, not only read

Frill says its MCP server can look things up but cannot change your data. TheyAsked lets an agent create a request for a customer, vote on their behalf with a note, reply, merge duplicates, change a status and draft the changelog. Destructive tools need an explicit confirm, and every write lands in an audit log.

  2. Revenue ranking comes built in

Frill lets you build a weighted score, and you can weight votes by attributes you send, such as spend. TheyAsked ranks every request by unique voters, the MRR of voting companies (each company counted once), momentum and opportunity with no setup. One `who_asked_for` call returns the companies, plans, MRR and voter notes behind a request.

  3. Answers inside Claude, not a JSON dump

TheyAsked ships MCP Apps: a ranked ledger with sparklines, KPI cards, request and account cards and charts, drawn right in claude.ai and Claude Desktop. Five MCP prompts, such as weekly_digest and prep_roadmap_review, show up as slash commands. Frill documents neither.

  4. Auth that fits a security review

Frill documents one auth method for MCP: a Bearer API key per company. TheyAsked supports OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration for claude.ai and ChatGPT, API keys for Claude Code and CI, 10 granular scopes and a separate /mcp/readonly endpoint. Customer text comes back fenced as untrusted data, so a post that says "ignore previous instructions" stays just text.

  5. SSO and API on the entry paid plan

Frill puts widget SSO on Growth, $149 a month, and its $25 Startup plan caps you at 50 active ideas. TheyAsked Pro is $29 a month with unlimited boards, customer SSO (JWT), the REST API, webhooks and MCP. Pricing is flat per workspace and voters are never counted.

  6. Made for apps, web and mobile

TheyAsked has a web widget and an embed for iOS and Android WebViews, and tags every vote by platform so you can see what mobile users ask for. Frill describes embedding its board and widget on a website; we could not find a mobile guide on its site.

When Frill is the better pick

  • You want a polished in-app widget with boosted announcements, scheduled posts, reactions and segment targeting.
  • You like scoring ideas on custom benefit and cost factors and seeing them on a Quick Wins matrix.
  • You need many admins on a low tier: Frill gives unlimited admins on every paid plan.
  • You want surveys (NPS, CSAT, polls) in the same tool, or an AI inbox that pulls requests from Slack, Zendesk, Jira, Linear and Trello.

Moving from Frill

In Frill, go to Settings, Privacy, Export Data and export Ideas (and Votes) as CSV; export Users and Followers from Settings, Misc if you want emails next to user IDs. In TheyAsked, open Settings, Import, pick Spreadsheet (CSV or XLSX) and map the columns to title, body, board, status, tags, votes, author email, created date and voter emails. Voters with an email become real votes, the rest stay as a vote count, and re-uploading the same file does not create duplicates. Comments are not part of this import. Start on the 14-day Pro trial so MCP, SSO and the API are on while you test.

How importing works

Questions

Does Frill have an MCP server?
Yes. Frill runs one at mcp.frill.co with 10 tools for ideas, comments, votes, statuses, topics, announcements and followers. Its docs say it is read-only and uses a Bearer API key. TheyAsked has 33 tools, including writes, with OAuth or API keys.
Can I weight Frill votes by revenue?
Partly. Frill lets you build a priority score from weighted factors and says votes can be weighted by customer attributes you pass, such as spend. TheyAsked computes the MRR of voting companies for every request out of the box, counts each company once, and exposes it to agents through who_asked_for and top_requests.
Is TheyAsked cheaper than Frill?
At the entry tier Frill is $25 and TheyAsked Pro is $29. Frill Startup caps you at 50 active ideas, and its widget SSO needs Growth at $149. TheyAsked Pro has unlimited requests, SSO, the API and MCP. TheyAsked also has a free plan with one board.
Can I move my Frill ideas and votes to TheyAsked?
Yes. Export ideas and votes as CSV from Frill (Settings, Privacy, Export Data) and import them with the spreadsheet importer, mapping columns to fields. Voters with an email come across as real votes.
Does TheyAsked have announcements like Frill?
TheyAsked has a public changelog that notifies everyone who asked for a shipped request. Frill goes further on announcements, with boosted popups in the widget, scheduled posts, reactions and segment targeting.
