Why AI product teams pick TheyAsked over Productboard

Productboard is a full product management suite: insights, roadmaps, objectives, specs and an AI agent called Spark. TheyAsked does one part of that job. It collects what customers ask for, ranks it by who asked and what they pay, and hands that to the agent that writes your code.

Short answer

If your company runs strategy, OKRs, roadmaps and specs in one tool across many product teams, Productboard is built for that and TheyAsked is not. If you are a small team that builds with Claude, Cursor or Codex and you want customer demand inside those tools, TheyAsked is the lighter and cheaper fit. You get a public board, votes weighted by revenue, and 33 MCP tools from $29 a month per workspace, while Productboard lists its Business plan at $59 per maker a month billed yearly with a five maker minimum. Many teams only use Productboard for the portal and insights. If that is you, TheyAsked covers that part and leaves the rest of the suite behind.

Why AI product managers and engineers pick TheyAsked

  1. Customer demand your agent can query

TheyAsked ships 33 MCP tools, 17 read and 16 write, plus 5 prompts such as weekly_digest and prep_roadmap_review. Ask Claude what Enterprise customers want this month and it calls top_requests with a plan filter. Productboard's MCP server is in beta and its docs center on specs: read them, edit them, comment and update status.

  2. Ranked by revenue, not by gut

Every request carries unique voters, the MRR of the companies voting, momentum over the last 14 days and an opportunity score. who_asked_for returns the plan mix, companies with MRR and their own words in one call. The agent gets a ranked list, so it does not have to add up votes itself.

  3. Flat price, no seat math

TheyAsked costs $29 a month for Pro with MCP, the API and webhooks, and voters are never counted. Productboard prices per maker and adds AI credits on top. A team of five makers on Productboard Business starts around $295 a month billed yearly, before credit top-ups.

  4. Safe to hand to an agent

Pick from 10 granular scopes or connect to /mcp/readonly so a connection can read but never write. Customer text comes back fenced as untrusted data, destructive tools like merge and remove vote need an explicit confirm, and every agent action lands in an audit log. OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration works in claude.ai and ChatGPT, and API keys cover Claude Code and CI.

  5. Views inside Claude

In claude.ai and Claude Desktop, TheyAsked tools draw interactive MCP Apps views: a ranked ledger with sparklines, KPI cards, request and account cards, and charts. You can mark a request planned from the view, with a confirmation step. Productboard does not document any MCP UI.

  6. The loop closes on its own surface

Customers ask through a portal on your domain, a web widget, or an iOS and Android WebView embed with signed JWT sign-in. When you ship, the changelog notifies everyone who asked. There is no hierarchy of products, components and features to design before customers can vote.

When Productboard is the better pick

  • Product organizations with many teams that need objectives, initiatives, roadmaps and specs in one place, with Teamspaces and contributors across the company.
  • Teams that want one customer insights repository wired to Jira, Azure DevOps and Salesforce, with AI Themes and allocation reports on Enterprise.
  • Companies that need SAML SSO, SCIM and whitelabeled portals inside a single PM suite contract.
  • PMs who want an AI agent that writes specs and PRDs from their own workspace, which is what Spark is built for.

Moving from Productboard

Export from Productboard as CSV. A maker or admin can export feedback (notes) from https://YOUR-WORKSPACE.productboard.com/api/notes/export, adding export_type=with_features to keep the link to each feature, and export features from /api/features/export; Productboard emails a download link. Companies and users export to CSV from a grid board, with columns such as email and annual revenue. In TheyAsked, open Settings, Import, Spreadsheet, drop the CSV or XLSX and map the columns: title, description, status, board, tags, author and voter emails. Then load companies with plan and MRR through the REST API or the upsert_company MCP tool, so the revenue ranking works from day one.

How importing works

Questions

Is TheyAsked a full replacement for Productboard?
No. TheyAsked replaces the portal and the customer request side: intake, votes, revenue weighting, roadmap and changelog. It has no OKRs, specs, initiatives or capacity planning. Teams that only use Productboard for feedback and a portal usually do not miss the rest.
Does Productboard have an MCP server?
Yes. Productboard runs a remote MCP server at mcp.productboard.com, in beta, with OAuth sign-in. Its documentation covers finding and editing specs, commenting and updating status. TheyAsked focuses its MCP on demand: who asked, what they pay, what is gaining votes, with write tools to log requests and votes from a call.
How do the prices compare for a small team?
TheyAsked Pro is $29 a month for the workspace with up to 10 team seats, and voters are free. Productboard's Spark billing FAQ lists Business at $59 per maker a month billed yearly, and the pricing page sets a five maker minimum, so five makers come to about $295 a month plus any credit top-ups.
Can my agent build what customers asked for?
Your agent can read the ranked list, see who asked and why, log new requests, mark one planned and draft the changelog. TheyAsked does not yet hand requests to a coding agent as briefs or open pull requests; you drive that step from Claude Code or Cursor today.
Can I keep Productboard and use TheyAsked for the portal?
Yes. Some teams keep Productboard for roadmaps and specs and run the customer board in TheyAsked, then send changes out through webhooks or the REST API. You lose the single source of truth, so decide which tool owns status.
