Portal address

theyasked.me/you, a free you.theyasked.me subdomain, or roadmap.yourcompany.com with one CNAME record.

Your public portal (feed, boards, posts, roadmap, changelog and sign-in) can live at one of three addresses. Pick one under Settings → Portal address (admins and owners):

Option Address Plans
TheyAsked path theyasked.me/acme All (the default)
Free subdomain acme.theyasked.me All
Your own domain roadmap.yourcompany.com Pro and up

acme is your workspace address (Settings → General). Picking an option shows the new URL and what happens to old links before you press Switch. Whatever you pick, notification emails, sign-in links, the RSS feed, webhook and MCP portalUrls, canonical and Open Graph tags, the sitemap and the dashboard's "Public portal" link use it.

Free subdomain (acme.theyasked.me)

  1. Settings → Portal address → Free subdomain → Switch to acme.theyasked.me.
  2. That's it: no DNS records, the certificate is already in place.

Rules for the name (it is your workspace address, so change it under Settings → General):

  • 1 to 63 characters: lowercase letters, numbers and dashes, not starting or ending with a dash.
  • Some names are reserved: www, app, api, docs, mail, email, smtp, admin, platform, domains, status, blog, help, support, cdn, static, assets, auth, oauth, mcp, dev, staging, test, beta, m, r (and the paths TheyAsked uses itself, like pricing or embed, and feedback and theyasked, kept for TheyAsked's own board). Names starting with xn-- must be valid internationalized names.
  • If your workspace address can't be a subdomain, the option says why; rename the workspace first.

Renaming the workspace while on a subdomain moves the subdomain with it (acme.theyasked.me → acme-labs.theyasked.me). The old subdomain (and the old theyasked.me/acme path) keeps redirecting (301) to the new address for 90 days, unless another workspace takes the name. Widget snippets and mobile embeds that name the old workspace address need updating, as before.

Going back to theyasked.me/acme sends visitors on the subdomain there (302), so links keep working.

Redirects and old links

  • With a subdomain or a live custom domain, theyasked.me/acme/… redirects permanently (301) to the same page at the new address, so search engines and old links move over. Turn this off under Old links → Redirect old links in the same settings page; canonical URLs point at the new address either way.
  • The widget and in-app embeds keep working unchanged (they are never redirected).
  • Visitors sign in again on the new address the first time: sign-in cookies belong to one host, and a subdomain never shares cookies with theyasked.me or other subdomains.
  • Your team keeps using the dashboard at theyasked.me/app; dashboard and sign-in pages opened on a portal address send you there.
  • "Powered by theyasked.me" stays as it is (credited to your workspace).

Your own domain

Serve your public portal at your own address, like roadmap.yourcompany.com, with a certificate we issue and renew for you. Included in the Pro plan and up.

Add the domain

  1. Open Settings → Portal address → Your own domain (admins and owners).

  2. Enter a subdomain you own, like roadmap.yourcompany.com, and press Connect domain.

    • Use a subdomain: root domains (yourcompany.com) can't point a CNAME at us.
    • No wildcards (*.yourcompany.com), IP addresses, ports or paths.
    • Internationalized names work (roadmap.bücher.de is stored as roadmap.xn--bcher-kva.de).
    • One domain per workspace. A domain can only belong to one workspace.
  3. Add the DNS record shown on the page at your DNS provider:

    Type Name Value
    CNAME roadmap domains.theyasked.me

If the page also lists TXT records (ownership or certificate), add those too. They only appear when Cloudflare asks for them, for example while the CNAME isn't visible yet.

Each value has a copy button. Most DNS panels want only the part before your domain in the Name field (roadmap, not roadmap.yourcompany.com); the page shows both.

DNS by provider

Cloudflare. DNS → Records → Add record. Type CNAME, Name roadmap, Target domains.theyasked.me. Set Proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud): an orange-cloud record can't be verified. Save.

GoDaddy. My Products → your domain → DNS → Add New Record. Type CNAME, Name roadmap, Value domains.theyasked.me, TTL 1 hour. Save.

Namecheap. Domain List → Manage → Advanced DNS → Add New Record. CNAME Record, Host roadmap, Value domains.theyasked.me (Namecheap adds the trailing dot). Save with the check mark.

Amazon Route 53. Hosted zones → your domain → Create record. Record name roadmap, type CNAME, value domains.theyasked.me, TTL 300. Create records.

Anything else. Add a CNAME record for the subdomain pointing at domains.theyasked.me. Remove any A, AAAA or other CNAME record on the same name first.

Status

Status What it means
Waiting for DNS We haven't seen the CNAME yet. Usually minutes; up to a few hours at most.
Issuing certificate DNS is right; the TLS certificate is being issued and deployed.
Live The portal answers at your domain over https.
Needs attention Cloudflare reported a problem. Its message is shown; fix it and press Check now.

The page re-checks every 20 seconds while it is open, and we check every 15 minutes in the background. You get an email when the domain goes live, or if it fails. Check now asks Cloudflare straight away.

When the domain is live

The first time the domain goes live it becomes your portal address (the redirects above apply). You can switch back to the subdomain or the path address at any time and return to the domain later, without removing it; while it isn't your address, visitors on the domain are sent (302) to the address you picked.

Remove (under Your own domain) deletes the domain everywhere and the portal goes back to theyasked.me/your-workspace. You can delete the DNS record afterwards. If your plan stops including custom domains, the domain pauses and visitors are sent to your subdomain or theyasked.me/your-workspace until it is included again.

Troubleshooting

  • Stuck on "Waiting for DNS". Check the record with dig CNAME roadmap.yourcompany.com +short; it must print domains.theyasked.me.. Look for a typo in the name (some panels append the domain twice: roadmap.yourcompany.com.yourcompany.com) and for an old A/AAAA record on the same name.
  • Your DNS is on Cloudflare. The record must be DNS only (grey cloud).
  • "CAA record prevents issuance". Your domain restricts which certificate authorities may issue for it. Add CAA records allowing letsencrypt.org, pki.goog and ssl.com, or remove the restriction for the subdomain.
  • "custom hostname does not CNAME to this zone". Normal while the record propagates. If it persists, add the ownership TXT record shown on the page.
  • "That domain is already connected to another workspace". Remove it from the other workspace first (or ask its owner to).
  • The portal shows "No feedback board lives at this address". The domain isn't live (yet), or it was removed. On name.theyasked.me: no workspace uses that name (or it is reserved).
  • acme.theyasked.me sends me to theyasked.me/acme. The workspace's portal address is still the path (or your own domain): switch it under Settings → Portal address.
